Sapsis Rigging in New York

Sapsis Rigging recently provided rigging services for two special events in New York City.

Target Model-LessFor the launch of the new Target Model-Less Fashion Show, Sapsis Rigging provided an eight-legged, self-climbing ground support system in Vanderbilt Hall in Grand Central Station. The rig was 40' wide and 80' long and was used to support lighting, audio and Barco projectors. The projectors were side-mounted to allow images to be projected in several directions. The Model-Less Fashion Show was billed as the world's first fashion show without models.

At the same time Sapsis Rigging provided the rigging for the latest 7th on Sale AIDS Benefit held at the 26th Street Armory in NYC. Sapsis Rigging has provided the rigging for every 7th on Sale event since they began in 1990. The rig for this year's production included over 75 hoists and approximately 3000 feet of truss.

The semi-annual affair features fashion designer clothing and samples on sale via an eBay auction and three sale days at the Lexington Avenue & 26th Street Armory. 100% of the money raised goes to services and housing for those living with HIV and AIDS.

LRLR & Behind the Scenes News
For the third year in a row, Bill Sapsis, Greg Williams & Alice Neff of the Long Reach Long Riders and the rest of the ESTA Foundation's Behind the Scenes crew, raffled off a motorcycle at LDI. The annual event, always a highlight on the last day of the show, attracted quite a crowd at the Behind the Scenes booth on the show floor. The motorcycle, dubbed The Broadway Chopper, was donated by Neil Mazzella, owner of Hudson Scenic. This is a custom bike built by Hudson Scenic and was very much a crowd pleaser. The bike was won by Ken Udell of Madison Wisconsin who wasn't present to accept his prize, so it will be shipped to him. Right after the show closed, however, Bill and Greg took the bike out back for a spin in the Convention Center parking lot. It's definitely a hard tail but boy can it move down a straightaway. (Shhh. Don't tell Ken) In addition to the bike raffle, it was announced at the show that ETC, the lighting equipment manufacturer in Madison, Wisconsin is offering a $50,000.00 challenge grant to Behind the Scenes. Fred Foster, President of ETC, made a short but eloquent speech at the raffle and invited everyone to support the program. The challenge grant will run for a year.

Best Excuse Ever for Postponing a Safety Inspection

"I'm sorry Mr. Harris, but we've just put a new Pacific bottlenose dolphin into the tank and he needs time to get acclimated."
-- As told to Chris Harris, lead inspector for Sapsis Rigging, Inc. when he tried to schedule an inspection at the National Aquarium in Baltimore, MD

Have a Green Christmas
Recycling fresh trees after Christmas can make a huge difference in reducing holiday waste. Instead of taking up space in the landfill, trees can be ground into wood chips, which can be used to mulch gardens or parks or to prevent erosion at a local watershed.

The National Christmas Tree Association, an organization which represents Christmas tree growers, has teamed up with Scottsdale, Arizona-based conservation group Earth 911 to point consumers in the right direction with their trees. On their Web site, you can enter your zip code to find the nearest of 3,800-plus spots nationwide that
accept old trees.
For more about Treecycling visit Earth 911 and the National Christmas Tree Association

The Golden Napkin Award

Our favorite field drawing of the month was the only technical information received
for a good-sized show in an unnamed major metropolitan city. We are especially impressed
at the use of two colors in highlighting the vivid detail.
